Editorial Reviews

Comedy about a dentist who gets mired in the bizarre intrigues of his daughter's soon-to-be father-in-law, who claims to be a CIA agent.

This 1979 comedy is absolutely indispensable for fans of Peter Falk, Alan Arkin, or Andrew Bergman, who wrote the film's screenplay and went on to direct The Freshman and Honeymoon in Vegas. (Let's forgive him for Striptease.) Arkin is extraordinarily funny as a dentist who quickly grows skeptical about the wild claims of his daughter's future father-in-law (Peter Falk) that he is a CIA agent. When he is drawn into a bizarre adventure in a banana republic, however, he takes a different view. Arthur Hiller (Love Story) provides serviceable direction, but the real draw here is the perfect chemistry between the two leads and Bergman's weirdly comic mind. Watch for the look on Arkin's face when Falk's character tells a story about giant tse-tse flies. --Tom Keogh

THE IN LAWS IS ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREAT COMEDIES WITH A PERFECT TEAM UP OF PETER FALK AND ALAN ARKIN. SOMETIMES THE BEST MOVIES DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE THE MOST FAMOUS CAST AND BIGGEST NAMES IN HOLLYWOOD TO GIVE US A MOVIE THAT KEEPS YOU LAUGHING FROM START TO FINISH. PETER FALK HAS BEEN IN SOME OF MY FAVORITE ALL TIME COMEDIES LIKE THE BRINKS JOB AND MURDER BY DEATH AND ALAN ARKIN ALWAYS BRINGS SOMETHING TO THE TABLE JUST CHECK OUT LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE OR THE NEW GET SMART MOVIE HE STEALS EVERY SCENE HE IS IN.

The Perfect Comedy

Has there ever been a funnier, more unpredictable film than this classic? As funny as Arkin and Falk are they are actually upstaged by Richard Libertini's brilliant performance as the crazed Latin American dictator with the thirsty talking hand. I have seen this movie dozens of times and it has never failed to leave rolling on the floor in laughter.

How about 100 stars?

This is a cult classic, absolutely the funniest movie ever made. I watch it at least once a year and laugh out loud every time. Definitely watch it with some friends, and buy two copies of the DVD because you'll wear out the first one.

This movie is excellent and wickedly funny. A very well done comedy, it is funny on several different levels as well. I recommend it to anyone. The newer remake is horrible compared to this one, different movie all together.
